Probably posting this in the wrong section, if so, whoops!
I'm looking to build a new rear end for my '95 Caprice. The peg-leg, and 3.08's are not cutting it anymore. Here's my problem, I could do all the work myself, but since I am planning on changing the gears out to 3.73's, I can't. My dad (who would be the one to help me with this project) says he doesn't have the proper tools to pull out/press in new bearings, otherwise we could tackle it ourselves. No sense in even trying something, rather just have the guy who has the proper tools do the job, and do it well of course. Basically, I need some input on who I should bring the rear to and have the work done. I hate having to rely on a place to do something for me, I've always been one to work on my own car, but this is something I can't tackle. Any input? Also, I could supply the parts, unless the shop can get a good deal on the parts. Any help at all will be gratefully appreciated. |

Just about any shop would be able to press on the bearings for a small fee. Its an easy process. When I did my rear, I just bought a new pinion bearing set, and with the standard .035 shim, the backlash and contact patch were spot on. I never had to split a single bearing.

See Tommy at Moonlight Garage in New Hyde Park. He has a very good reputation as a rear end specialist. He did mine and everything is perfect. I have his number. Private message me if you are interested in it. I dont wanna step on any sponsers toes.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm going to do some more research on what I'm going to be doing, and then probably have a shop press everything in and I'll maybe tackle the rest.

I already spoke with BK. He told me the same thing. I want to do some browsing around first, get some quotes, and lead-times on how long the job would take. I absolutely HATE leaving my car at a shop..
![]() One time had the car in the body shop for 3 days, I was cringing day after day.. and my car isn't even that nice! Imagine I had a mint car? |
